Meet Melody Wang

INDEPENDENT WRITER

Melody Wang is the proud daughter of Chinese immigrants and she loves to write. Ever since she was young, Melody has filled journals upon journals of memories, melodic verses, and whatever creative stories she could conjure. In high school, her writings branched out into news reports, journalism, and communication.

A Chinese American in the United States, Melody has often found it challenging to balance the cultural differences and values associated with growing up in a Chinese family while surrounded by American peers. It has been difficult for both parts of her identity to coexist, especially during 2020 when anti-Asian hate crimes and misrepresentations hit a peak.

Since then, Melody has set her eyes on using her writing to aid pivotal societal movements and bring light to the stories of various ethnic groups in the United States, starting with Chinese Americans. Her ambitions have led to one of her largest, most purposeful projects to date: her debut young adult book, Chinatown Legacies: Visual Ode to the Stories Behind the Streets. A photography based work with poetic styled writing, Chinatown Legacies walks readers through the wonders of Chinatown and the courageous immigration stories of its people.

Melody hopes that through her work, she may amplify the voices of the most marginalized and misunderstood groups in society. Ultimately, highlighting all the beauty they bring to the United States.
